Seeing through the lens of a pencil: How archaeologists use the art of sketching to better visualize and understand what they see
In this episode, three archaeologists (Badillo, Ferrier, and Jordan) discuss how drawing engages different parts of the brain and allows the archaeologist to highlight specific aspects of the excavation that are important to the interpretive process. Archaeologists, at times create simple sketches to record spatial relationships of stratigraphic layers, features, and artifacts, or to share ideas with one another as we develop our interpretation of past events. At times, they opt to create a scientific drawing, or map, that includes scale in order to visualize and understand what they are seeing.

Using Archaeology Tools to Fight COVID-19 - with Dr. Alex Elvis Badillo (click to listen)
In this first pilot episode of "The Forest and the Trees," David Pittman and Mindy Gilbert talk with Dr. Alex Elvis Badillo, an assistant professor at Indiana State University, who was inspired and encouraged by two students to make use of special equipment in his temporary garage lab to help people on the front lines of the coronavirus pandemic. Dr. Alex Badillo is starting his third year as assistant professor of Earth and Environmental Systems at Indiana State University. He is also the founder of the Geospatial and Virtual Archaeology Laboratory and Studio, or GVALS, at ISU. After receiving new 3-D printers, that were ordered before the coronavirus attacked the world, Dr. Badillo was encouraged by two students to use the printers to make "ear savers," which are simple devices that improve the comfort of wearing a face mask for extended periods.
